How does it work? Is it really that easy to construct and
update a chart?
Suppose you are monitoring the
number of returned goods by month. You have data for the past
15 months. The
data is entered into an Excel spreadsheet as shown below.
| Month |
Number
of Returned Goods (c) |
| Jan-05 |
18 |
| Feb-05 |
25 |
| Mar-05 |
21 |
| Apr-05 |
30 |
| May-05 |
27 |
| Jun-05 |
44 |
| Jul-05 |
30 |
| Aug-05 |
24 |
| Sep-05 |
23 |
| Oct-05 |
30 |
| Nov-05 |
23 |
| Dec-05 |
20 |
| Jan-06 |
44 |
| Feb-06 |
21 |
| Mar-06 |
18 |
Highlight the months. Then select the attribute
control chart icon from the SPC toolbar. You will get
the dialog box below. Select the c Chart option.

You then see the dialog box below. Enter the chart
name and other information.

Then select OK. The c control chart below is
generated.

Note that the
out of control points are in red. To update the chart, simply add the new month
of data on the worksheet. For example, suppose in April
2006, there were 31 returned goods. The data is added on the
worksheet as shown below.
| Month |
Number
of Returned Goods (c) |
| Jan-05 |
18 |
| Feb-05 |
25 |
| Mar-05 |
21 |
| Apr-05 |

| May-05 |

| Jun-05 |

| Jul-05 |

Then select the Update chart from the SPC
toolbar. Select the chart name from a list of charts
and the chart is automatically updated.

The chart is updated with two simple
clicks. It doesn't get much easier than this!
